Site Rules

Note: Rules are subject to change, however a public notice will be given if so.

  • 1. CONTENT:

This is a HISTORICAL site. Please keep all posts reflecting this. It is also based on the Kushiel's Legacy books by Jacqueline Carey and we strive to keep things as realistic to that setting as possible while still allowing some creative license.

  • 2. CHARACTERS:

If you wish to create a canon character type (Adept/Cassiline/Priest or Priestess), but you do not wish for them to follow the exact canon then you must discuss this with staff first. As in the real world not everyone is what they appear to be so it’s only fair that some roles will be open to interpretation. But staff must be notified and aware of this in writing so that we may discuss any concerns we may have with it.

    • 2a. Royal Characters are not permissible - they are by invitation only and are generally given out as a reward for activity.
    • 2b. Anguissettes and other God-touched characters are not permissable. In our timeline Phedre is likely still alive (if very elderly) and it is meant to be an extremely rare occurrence for anyone to be touched by an Angel. Having some minor gifts from one's bloodline (being good with plants, or a natural talent at healing, or a born warrior) is acceptable, however.
    • 2c. Sovereign Duc/Duchesses, Duc/Duchesses - are not permissible as a first character. We wish you to get a feel for the site and setting first. When you wish to make a Duc/hesse, please request permission first as there are a limited number of positions available.
    • 2d. If you wish to drop characters - there is a protocol to follow. If the character in question has not had any RP whatsoever, then you can request for the character to be deleted. If, however, the character has had RP, then it must be retired, or changed to Bucket status for someone else to pick up. If the character has connections/plots with other characters, then we request that you contact the relevant players to let them know. It is not our intent to force you to keep characters you no longer wish to play, but rather see it as a courtesy to those that are still actively involved with your character and give them chance to work around it.
  • 3. STAFF:

It is important that any information or questions are sent to only ONE staff member at a time. Sending multiple single PMs often creates a mess that makes it difficult for the staff to meet the needs of the other players. However, you are welcome to CC multiple staff members in any PM; in this way, we can see who has responded and if it still needs to be taken care of.

  • 4. ROLEPLAYING:

Players are to post in first person and past tense only and in all circumstances except bios, which are to be written in omniscient third person. NPCs may be posted in third person limited from the point of view of the playing character.

    • 4a. Please, no 'godmodding' which is a fairly basic prerequisite for any good RP.
    • 4b. Any thread that takes place in a public forum can be entered upon by another character. Please try to be respectful and open to this. Threads in public places are by definition open, and people may show up in them.

  • 5. INACTIVE/ABANDONED:

    INACTIVE ACCOUNT

If an account is registered with the board, but not posted in for 30 days, it will be deleted. If for some reason you think it's going to take longer than 30 days to post a bio/start posting on the board, please PM an admin for an extension.

    INACTIVE THREADS

In effort to protect active RPers, we have implemented an "Inactive Thread" rule. The idea of it is not to punish slower RPers, but to encourage threads to remain active, and not drag out for months, especially between posts. The basic outline of the rule is as follows:

    • a. If after 30 days a player has not posted to a thread, the thread can be locked by the other party's request, but may be reopened by request as long as all parties agree.
    • b. If there are more than two players in a thread and one party has stopped posting, the character is considered otherwise busy/disengaged from a thread after 2 weeks of not posting. For example:

Jane, Bill & Carlos are in a thread together at the horse races. Jane and Bill are laughing at a joke Carlos is telling, but Carlos stops posting. Jane and Bill are left with a stale thread that is no longer able to move forward; after 2 weeks of waiting, Jane and Bill are able to be 'distracted' by something else, and the thread moves forward without Carlos. If Carlos wishes to rejoin the thread, he must do so in a positive manner, with no irritation towards Jane & Bill. Not everything has to be explained - glazing is the best possible solution to Carlos' sudden spaciness. Let it go.

Please note - the only exception to this rule is a posted hiatus.

  • 6. ACTIVITY:

If you have not been active in a 30 day period, either OOC or IC, we will make your Player Account inactive and you will no longer be a member of Kushiel's Legacy. We are always very happy to have players return, of course, and all you will need to do is PM a staff member to ask that your characters be reinstated. Characters are not killed off if it can be helped, but are instead retired. Characters who belong to others originally will revert back to them if they want them, and Royals will revert back to Staff Control to be potentially redistributed. In addition, the playbys for those characters are then free for others to use. This is done to protect those who are still actively RPing on Kushiel's Legacy, not as a punishment to those who leave.

Again, the only exception to this rule is a posted hiatus. Communication is the key here. We know that Real Life can get hectic and/or overwhelming so please post a hiatus or PM a member of staff to let us know what is going on. That way your accounts and characters will remain intact until you can return.

    • 6a. If you post a hiatus, it will remain in effect for a total of 90 days. If that is exceeded and you have not returned or contacted staff for an extension, your Player Account will be rendered inactive and your characters retired. This is to prevent IC connections/relationships and plots from hanging indefinitely.

  • 7. IT'S ALL FUN AND GAMES:

You know the old saying, if you assume you make an ass out of you and me. If you are unsure, about anything, in any way, PLEASE ask an Admin. It's better that you ask than make a mistake. Please use your heads about things too, if you think that what you're going to do is in any way something that could be a problem, ask. It will save you and us a lot of trouble and RPing time. Characters will go for other characters for power, money, wealth, love… We encourage this. However, we encourage it in character only, and want to remind everyone that things that happen in character must stay in character. If your character is in a relationship with another, and a third character takes an interest in the love of yours, don't get mad! Accept the challenge, try to woo your characters love, confront the opposing character, etc. Life isn't daisies all the time, and sometimes a little strife can make for some great, and fun, writing.

On that note, remember, all characters have responsibilities. Playing a high standing noble or a royal has privileges, and rightly so! They are allowed access that other characters cannot be granted, automatically have much status, and characters must bend neck to them. However, they have responsibilities, too. High Noble (ducs/duchesses and sovereign ducs/duchesses) and royal characters made/adopted/taken on at the start of Kushiel's Legacy or thereafter may be subject to being married at the Crown's decision (aka management). This is not to say it will definitely happen, only that it may. And remember, too -- if your character breaks a law/does something naughty IC, they can and probably will be held accountable for it. The consequences vary, but can include time in the dungeons, brought before a General, or in extreme cases, before the King and Queen. Punishments will vary as well, but if your character has gone on a killing spree, don't expect them to get away with it and walk away with a slap on the wrist.

  • 8. SIGNATURES:

In the interest of keeping bandwidth down as well as keeping images at a reasonable size, there is a size limit: 250x600px. To break it down, images may not be taller than 250px, or wider than 600px. They may not be distracting/loud/obnoxious/etc., of which will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the staff and management of Kushiel's Legacy.

  • 9. SEXY AND SEXYTIME PICS ON KL:

This is an adult board, with adult themes - we all know it and acknowledge it. However, the difference between text and pictures is extreme, and can make the difference between people being able to post a lot, or only very minimally. To this effect, pictures of breasts, rears, genitalia are allowed, however it must not be of a pornographic nature. Think artful & graceful instead. If you are unsure about the tastefulness of the picture, either contact a staff member or place the picture within [spoiler] tags.

    THREADS

Any threads with racy pictures must be labelled with [EXPLICIT IMAGES] or [NSFW]. If you are not the creator of the thread, contact a staff member to edit it for you. If threads are found with images but have not been properly labelled, warnings will be issued. Racy images or gifs must be placed either as links rather than pictures or placed in [spoiler] tags as it is better safe than sorry.

    SIGS

Must be tasteful, no nipples, cracks, dingalings or anything else. Some cleavage is fine - we can't allow sigs the same freedom as threads as it would be ridiculous/impossible to patrol each thread with chars having such images in their sigs. Any questions on it, feel free to contact a staffer! Better safe than sorry.
