Damien is attractive in the way that a viper is beautiful, fresh spilled blood on untouched snow, the sickly sweet smell of decay, or the dark pleasure in committing sin. His beauty and charm are marred by an underlying darkness that is not too far beneath the surface. It dances in his grin and plays in his eyes. When it comes to clothing that rotted prettiness, Damien prefers dark clothes that show off his father's wealth with the fabrics and the detail work. However he also very much enjoys shocking others, so it is not uncommon that the intricate embroidery on a doublet when seen from a certain angle to contain scenes of debauchery and perversity. In addition, Damien enjoys going out into public still wearing the blood of his latest 'plaything', this may be a small smear just under the cuff of his shirt, a small smudge just under the neckline of his doublet, or liberally splashing his chest but unseen. One of his favorite tricks is to just barely cover the smear of red at his wrist, allowing it to become uncovered while reaching for a goblet or to shake hands. Damien watches those around him like a hawk for their reactions to this.
The de Carman heir is, to be blunt, a charming monster. He is a sadist who derives the most pleasure of psychologically and physically torturing others, especially ones that come to him 'willingly', ones that have racked up debts or Damien has managed to acquire blackmail material on. He gives them the choice of submitting to him and be his 'plaything' or risk being shunned by society, have their family sent to debtor's prison, or some other consequence. Each tear they shed under his tender care, is like ambrosia to him because he knows they are suffering but of their own free will. Not because they enjoy what he is doing but because they need him.
And to add to Damien's capacity to inflict pain, the young man is incredibly intelligent and cunning especially when it comes to ferreting out other's secret sins and shames. Information he uses liberally to blackmail and extort, either in the cause of the family business, favors done for close 'friends', or most often his own enjoyment.
The only things that Damien truly cares about are his kennels. He maintains two of them. One is for his hounds, most of which are mutts that he adopts and trains. These are probably the only creatures he truly has true affection for. The other are the various playthings that he maintains either through blackmail, payment, or some other method of coercion. These he torments and degrades until they're broken at which point he finds a way to get rid of them as he finds things that don't cry or beg but just emotionlessly accept what he does to them to no fun at all.
History:
Damien is a bastard. This describes both the nature of his birth and his general personality. The young d'Angeline noble was born to Richard de Carman, his birth a product of rape. After Damien was born, his mother dropped him at the de Carman Townhome before committing suicide, leaving the young boy to be raised by his brutal and sadistic father. It is no surprise then how Damien turned out.
As Damien grew his own appetites for pain and humiliation grew, becoming even greater than his father's as he tried to make the elder de Carman proud of him. It was a futile attempt as de Carman was practically incapable of feeling such an emotion. Especially for a bastard. Although he did show affection in his own way, first by giving Damien his first hound which he trained to be a vicious but obedient creature. And later with human playthings.
When Damien was 6, his father purchased Sara Tolbert from her parents and brought her into their house. His father had done similar in the past, but something about Sara made her special to Damien, sadly for Sara. As the two grew, Damien went out of his way to torment the older girl and not just in finding ways to make her work take longer but refusing to call her by her name, instead he called her Buttercup which as he told her was the name of a dog he'd once owned. He made her wear the dog's old collar and if his father wasn't around it was the dog's bowl she had to use.
When Sara started her training to be a Servant of Naamah, Damien would often find excuses to attend as well. Not to learn how to enjoy the pain but in how to give it. Especially how to deliver the pain so the recipient couldn't feel pleasure. Damien would make Sara practice the lessons with him and if she didn't, he would punish her for neglecting her studies. Again, the cruel boy didn't rely purely on physical torture but also psychological.
As puberty started, and Damien started to view Sara's nubile body with a sexual focus, his father pulled him violently aside and instructed him in no uncertain terms that he was not to have sex with the pet. Torture her, degrade her, but not have sex. Perhaps things would have been easier on Sara if Richard had not laid down that mandate, at least then Damien could have vented his lust in less.. creative ways. And as well, by making Sara off limits, she became forbidden fruit. That isn't to say Damien didn't include Sara in his 'acts of love', she was just never the direct object of his amorous affections but used in some twisted foreplay and to help clean up afterwards.
As part of Sara's 'training', the Comte would make her stand naked (if she was lucky) and recount in exact detail all the degrading and humiliating things that were done to her one her assignations. Damien would often be present for these and at times would bring along some plaything to enjoy as Sara spoke of hot needles, painful bondage, things shoved into her, etc. He would listen and catalogue all of the abuses, some he would try later on some other girl, others he thought of ways to improve upon them as he waited for the day his father would lift the ban on Sara.
That day finally came on Damien's eighteenth name day
Damien had been promised Sara for three days at the family Chateau for his name day and with all of the build up, he had worked extra hard to make sure it was three days neither of them would forget. He'd had a special collar made just for Sara: it had a slip locking mechanism that allowed Damien to tighten in with a tug, as well there were small spikes on the inside that would dig in, not long enough to cause any true damage (one of his father's rules) but it would most definitely hurt. And the final touch was the 'Butter Cup' worked into the leather. For those three days, Damien was finally able to make a reality all of the depraved things he's wanted to do to Sara over the last decade: he made her into a dog for several hours, stuck a butt plug made to look like a deer tail in her ass and hunter her through the family grounds with his hounds, the only food was served in a dog's bowl and 'flavored' with his seed, whipped and 'washed' her in salt water, and on and on and on. Even unconscious he continued his tortures. Eventually their time together was up and in some twisted romantic gesture he gave Sara the collar as a 'souvenir of their time together'. His own souvenir was a set of now red silk ropes that had started the time off white, and a small lock of Sara's hair he put in a locket to remember her.
When they returned to the City, Damien's father once again banned him from having sex with Sara. In a fit of anger, the young noble took his disappointment out on a maid, doing permanent damage to the girl. The Comte covered up the incident by paying off the family and sending them to live at the Chateau. The rebuke that Damien received was not about breaking one's toys but about ensuring no one found out. Richard de Carman would have been happier if his bastard son had simply killed the girl and disposed of her body leaving a note that she'd run off with her lover.
One of the biggest changes in Damien's life came when he was twenty. He and and some "friends" were visiting Valerian House when Damien selected and adept to spend some time with. It was pure coincidence that this was only weeks after Sara had earned her marque and that he chose a lithe brunette adept that bore a resemblance to his father's former pet. During the assignation, Damien pushed things too far but due to a creative gag (he had used straps to tie the toe of his boot firmly in her mouth) and drove his partner into unconscious. Not that he noticed until he was done. A review determined that while Damian had not refused to recognize the signale he had not taken adequate precautions to keep her safe. This action had him banned from the Night Court and no adept of a House will accept his patronage.
A few months later, Damien again pushed things too far when a minor noble, that Damien was blackmailing in order to use both the Comte's wife and his mother as his playthings, called his bluff. He was specifically making the mother act as his surrogate in torturing her daughter in law. The Comte had finally had enough when he found his mother anally raping his wife wife Damien gleefully used her mouth which was held open by some kind of gag device. The noble had Damien forcefully removed from his townhome even as the threat of the blackmail hung over him. As soon as he returned home (and had burned off his excess excitement on one of his house pets), Damien released the blackmail effectively ruining the Comte and his heir.
The young de Carman's father was livid at the incident. Not that Damien had blackmailed anyone, Richard was actually for once proud of his son for that, but that he had been overconfident in the blackmail and pushed things too far. It was always important to know your victims breaking point. With both the Night Court banishment, now this new scandal, and as Damien was twenty and with no true world experience, his father packed Damien up and sent him off to visit friends abroad to study, fuck, and do whatever he wanted as long as it stayed out of sight and out of mind. Just what he got up to on his travels is still unknown to his father and Terre d'Ange society in general.
Recently Damien was recalled from La Serenissma and told to return to Terre d'Ange by his father. Upon arrival he was informed that Richard was naming him Heir to the de Carman title, properties, and the merchant interests that accompany it. The act stunned Damien as he had expected to return home to find his father had wed and was in the process of producing a legitimate heir. Why his father has chosen now to name him heir, Damien doesn't know which naturally makes him wary. However he does know one thing, his father expects him to take his own bride as soon as possible and produce an heir of his own. This is currently his primary goal in the City in addition to satisfying his hunger for other's pain and humiliation.
