Appearance/Personality: Intense. Inscrutable. These are the usual sorts of words to first come to mind when describing Charlemagne, rather than simple remarks on his looks. He is attractive enough, if not so much as to stand apart from other D'Angelines, but more than that, he is a compelling, and at times intimidating, figure. Leaf green eyes stare out from deep set sockets beneath thick brows, his thoughts often impenetrable. An impression all the more profound for the fact that he rarely shows much overt emotion.

His features are middling, a mixture of angular and softer features. Nose straight and sharp as an arrow, thin-lipped mouth, a notable scar between them that he's had since birth. This goes for Charlemagne's body as well, which is neither overly bony or brawny, nor particularly tall or diminutive. His hair is kept relatively short, and is frequently messy - in a more careless than rakish way. Though usually well dressed and neat, he cares little for that sort of vanity.

Instead, he is far more concerned with certain behaviors, obsessively so, which runs contrary to his sometimes unkempt appearance. Charlemagne is often dispassionate, but almost always impeccably polite, soft spoken, exhibiting all of the 'correct' manners. Given that, he usually blends in rather well in formal situations, but tends to stick out the more casual things are.

No matter the setting, he frequently strikes others as odd or... off in some inexplicable way. This can range from being thought awkward and shy, to pompous and aloof. If one is particularly astute, or merely imaginative, even vaguely unnerving.

On the flip-side of that calm, courteous coin, Charlemagne has a fearsome temper. Violent and volatile, it can be a truly dangerous thing. Sudden and terrible. His desires are also, even in a society that is widely accepting of various proclivities, abnormal. Distasteful. In the simplest terms, he has a need for people and things -which he often equates as one and the same- around him to fit into the rigid way he sees the world. Whether that falls in line with what society deems befitting, or only adheres to the twisted set of rules within his own mind.

History: In many ways Charlemagne's childhood was a privileged one. The second son of a L'Agnacite comte, he enjoyed all the spoils, luxuries, and education afforded one of noble birth, without the burden of responsibility. That fell to his older brother, Salomon. Yet their mother was also incredibly strict when it came to particular things. Proper behavior and decorum were paramount in their household. So much so that it became a compulsion which has followed Charlemagne throughout his life.

His early days were taken with the usual diversions of one of his social standing. Academia, swordplay, hunting, and so on. In particular, he quickly developed a fondness for travel. Wishing to understand the world around him, and perhaps more importantly, to quantify and fit everything into place, he found that other cultures and customs both galled and fascinated him in turns. It also afforded him opportunities for business dealings... and less savory pursuits.

Charlemagne has journeyed far and wide, even venturing so far as joining the expedition to Terra Nova. From which he brought back the habit of smoking the pungent rolled leaves of the tobacco plant. One of many habits, trinkets, contracts and arrangements he's collected during these capers. Not to mention the various rumors that have traveled in his wake.

One such scandal was that involving his late wife, Miriam. A charming Kusheline woman, they married young. More out of a sense of duty and expectation for his part than any desire to settle with a partner. Even so, there seemed to be some genuine affection between the pair, and she often acted as a balance to his odd moods and ill temper. Though she was unfortunately not always able to escape his wrath.

Which is likely why, when she fell to a fever during a trip abroad, some were suspicious of the circumstances. Despite the story being quite clear and well corroborated. It was never enough to openly accuse Charlemagne, however.

Afterwards, he became even more markedly reserved and withdrawn from society, and sent their two sons to foster with their mother's family, furthering his isolation. Though that isn't to say that he had no social contacts or interactions. Notably, he was friends with -if such a word could be used with men such as these- Comte Richard de Carman, and held many associates in common with him. A network he maintains still, that supports and encourages his strangeness and depravity. And theirs.
