Appearance: Though Joyse may be petite in stature, she more than makes up for it in her presence. Her skin is dark like rich caramel, which betrays her Bhodestani heritage. Her eyes are dark, framed by thick lashes that make it seemed as if she is wearing khol around them. Her nose is lender, with a button-ish quality, which leads down to her mouth. Her lips are plump, her mouth not to over wide, and while she does not smile all the time, when she does it lights up her whole face. Her body looks slender, but she has strength to her arms and hands due to working with wood.
Personality: Joyse is grateful for all she has in her life now, as she has known hardship as well as the comfort she now has. She gives the impression of having people close, though she really does tend to keep them at arm’s length. But if she let anyone in, truly in, she would be loyal indeed to them. Joyse is just a little overly flirty and friendly. She knows what she wants, and she knows how to try and get it. She saw at a young age that sex could get her those things, and it is a lesson she has never forgotten. She is good at reading people, and showing them what they want to see. There could be any reason for someone to dislike her, but she would hardly let it bother her if they did. She has her priorities now, and she puts her energy into that, though if someone tried to hurt her boy she would rain down hells fury on them. Sleights to her she can take, sleights to her son she will not accept.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Her son Sebastian, he is both her greatest strength, giving her a reason to get up every day, and do the best she can. But he is also her weakness, the constant worry over him, and if she is providing enough for him is enough to drive her to distraction.

History: Joyse was born of a union between Matild Cassou, a d'Angeline maid, and Dequan Baoe, a Bhodestani sailor. They fell in love when they met in the port when he came in on a trading vessel, and it was Elua sent love from there in. They had planned to marry, and Matild opened her womb for him, hoping that she would be with child when he returned from his recent voyage, when they finally wed. But he never returned as his ship was set upon by pirates, and all hands were reported as lost.
Being with child, she was dismissed from her post, and took to taking whatever small jobs she could to provide for her and her child. They lived in a run down building with a number of other families, one owned by a less than scrupulous man, who liked to take his rent from the women of age who lived there. Joyse witnessed such as she grew up, learning that sex could indeed pay for much in life.
Her Mother died of a fever and chills when she was twelve, and Joyse went to live in a less than reputable Salon in the Doorstep. She worked there, doing washing and cleaning up after the Servants and their Patrons, with the understanding that when she came of age she would enter into Naamah's Service. It was not something she wished to do, but she had seen how her Mother had used sex to pay her way for them both. Surely, she thought Naamah would understand that, in her situation.
The owner of the "salon" kept Joyse waiting until she was eighteen before letting her start with Patrons, as she was not sure if she was d'angeline enough to have a closed womb. Even at eighteen she was not sure, but she entered into the service loosely, as really the salon owner was not one to buy doves or have marques made. He simply took a percentage of what she earned on her back. She hated it, but she did what she did, and saved what she could.
Until she fell pregnant at twenty four. It seemed that she was not d'angeline enough. She was sure she knew who her Babes father was, but he was a noble and while the child could look and pass for a full d'angeline, his family would never accept her. So she kept it from him, and as soon as the owner of the salon knew she was with child, he threw her out onto the streets.
A kind Carpenter saw her, and decided to take pity on her and took her in, letting her sleep in a half used store room, and let her clean up after working hours to pay for her room, and the food he supplied her. She began to practise carving in the evenings on the old bits of scrap wood. When the owner found these, he saw the raw talent that she possessed, and decided to take her on as an apprentice. He paid her a fair wage, and continued to let her stay in the back of the warehouse space, turning it into a proper place for when she had the babe. When the babe was born a boy, Joyse named him Sebastian, a grand name as she knew the boy would have a grand future ahead of him.
In the time since, she managed to rent a small flat and managed to get Sebastian into a school which was run by Priests of Elua and Eisheth, and she continued working as a carpenter. She is now of journeyman rank, and she works on things that range from wagon wheels to fancy pieces like chairs and tables, not to noble standard, but the upper merchant class would be proud to have them in their home.
