Rank/Title: Citizen

Country/Province: TdA/City of Elua
Townhome Request: Addy's House

Appearance/Personality: Like most D'Angelines, Adelaide (Addy to her friends and family) is an attractive woman. Her vibrant red hair, falling in a long mane of wavy flames, drawing attention in particular. Striking though it is, that one feature is not the only one worth noticing, however. While their shade isn't remarkable on its own, the depth of knowing and calculation in her blue eyes begs mention. As does the fullness of her smile, the soft curves of her body. That creamy porcelain skin, graced with a comely dusting of freckles here and there.

While she is perfectly capable of schmoozing, lavishing affection and attention on those that she's impressed with or wants something from, the fiery redhead can be astonishingly cold. That charming demeanor often just a facade for her shrewd, cynical mind. Given to caustic wit and analytical number crunching. Those that know her well see more of that side of her, but regardless of how well one knows her, one will find that Addy is more friendly the more coin you've got to spend - especially if you're spending that coin in her family's betting parlors, or on her specifically.

Some might think this purely greed and manipulation, and to be fair those things play their part, but it isn't only that. To Adelaide wealth and affection are inextricably linked. Elua bid the people to 'love as thou wilt' and to her nothing is so universally adored as money. That said, she's more apt to welcome a poor man willing to bet his last coin than a rich miser. It's about the pursuit, the chance, the spending and the lending. If all one's money does is sit and accumulate, she figures it pointless. With only the rare exception, coin is the literal currency of Addy's heart.

History: Jean-Bastien Vidler wasn't a well to do man, nor were his prospects in life all that promising, being the fifth child of a modest tailor. Fortunately, he had a talent for calculations, and found work in the Doorstep from a young age working for various less than reputable establishments where betting took place. As he got older and accumulated a bit of his own coin, he came to work at the salon of a former Bryony by the name of Madame Aurélie.

There the young man met and fell in love with the lady of the house's daughter, Coralie. It wasn't long before they were wed, and with the help of Coralie's mother, they opened the first of their own gambling houses that doubled as salons and dens of comfort and luxury for those that perhaps didn't have quite enough coin to enjoy such in their own homes. A taste of what they could have if only they won once more. An alluring fantasy that brought the Vidlers many clients, and a good deal of coin.

In time their business grew, encompassing several betting parlors throughout the City, and their family grew as well. Firstborn was Adelaide, as fiery haired as her mother, though with the more shrewd mentality of her father, followed by two younger brothers, Auron and Ti-Michel. Neither of which showed as much interest in the family business as their sister. It was clear that she'd inherited her father and grandmother's affinity for figures and chance, and Jean-Bastien took pride in grooming her as his heir. Even if he wished her brothers shared her enthusiasm.

As a girl Addy would shadow him, assisting in a myriad of tasks for managing the family's various establishments, and eventually one was given over to her lone control. Her brothers briefly took similar roles in other betting houses, but were not so suited to it as she was. One of them was too fond of trying his own (abysmal) luck, and the other simply had no knack for it. They both occasionally find their way back to working odd jobs for the family business, but no one disputes the fact that control of the small, but lucrative Vidler gambling empire will one day go to Adelaide.

Some time after gaining possession of her own parlor, Adelaide became quite taken with one of her regular patrons. Theirs was a whirlwind affair, but when she mentioned marriage, the man would always find some way to demur or change the topic. In the foolishness of youth, she thought his reluctance due to some lacking on her part. When lavish gifts and other forms of persuasion failed to move him, she lit a candle to Eisheth instead, in the hopes that having a child would cement their relationship. As his interests were less than domestic, the result was the opposite of what she intended. When he'd learned of what she'd done, the man left her... not knowing that she was already pregnant.

Eventually she came to realise that it wouldn't have likely made any difference if he had known. That all along, he hadn't wanted to commit to her, and it had only been her own shortsightedness that had convinced her differently. Nevertheless, she doesn't regret the decision, unwise as it was. Otherwise she wouldn't have her daughter. The one person she cherishes above all others, that is worth more than all the gold and jewels in the world.

It's been some years since then, her daughter grows like a weed, but though Addy has had no shortage of lovers, she's had no other children. So, her devotion remains to her business, the coin that flows through it, and to Corinne. Her one true treasure.

He's your guy
When stocks are high,
But beware when they start to descend.

It's then that those louses
Go back to their spouses.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend.
