History:
Roxane de Mereliot had several children. Her fourth daughter, Catherine, married a Vralian prince Pierre Alexandre in order to solidify a political relationship with Vralia. The two had three daughters - Gaia, Anne-Clotilde, and Nathalie - and a son - Alexandre. The children grew up happily in Marsilikos, part of a large band of young de Mereliots. At adulthood, Anne-Clothilde married a Flatlander prince, Nathalie returned to her father's homeland of Vralia to marry another Romanov prince, Gaia married her childhood sweetheart Robert Carmine, and Alexandre had a consort named Thibaud no Balm.
When Jeanne de Mereliot stepped down from her position as Lady of Marsilikos, Gaia's brother Alexandre participated in an attempted coup to place a male Mereliot on the seat of Marsilikos. Lessandrie de Mereliot managed to take the seat, crushing the coup. Deeply ashamed of her son's involvement, Gaia's mother Catherine personally beheaded her son. Gaia was there for the execution, while her sisters were not, and it has haunted her ever since.
She and Robert lived out a pleasant but childless existence in Marsilikos, until Robert's untimely death when he drowned during a sea voyage to Carthage.
Due to her brother's treachery, Gaia steered clear of politicking around her cousins, first Lessandrie and then Lorelei. Instead, she focused on supporting the soldiers and navy sailors stationed in Marsilikos. She became so popular among the d'Angeline troops that one will notice that many sailor's daughters will have the name "Gaia" or "Dieudonnee" (her middle name). So when Lorelei de Mereliot announced that she would be stepping down from the position of Lady of Marsilikos, the sailors and soldiers rallied around the somewhat surprised Gaia; they wanted her to be the Lady. After much convincing, Gaia agreed to become the Lady of Marsilikos and moved into the Palais de Marseille.
