History:
Dorji was born to weavers in Tufan. She had an average early life, but at about the age of seven, she began having pains in her abdomen. Concerned, her parents brought her to all manner of physicians and healers - or at least ones they could afford. One physician finally discovered what was ailing the young girl: her uterus was misshapen; it was a thin T-shape and not a wide triangle. He predicted that massage would clear up the pain, but Dorji would never have children.
Dorji's mother was furious. What good was a daughter who could not bear children, who could not be married? She told her husband to cast the girl out. Taking pity on his daughter, Lhamo left the house with her and headed westward - toward a land that he had heard whispers of. A land with angels that did not get pregnant unless the angels saw fit. His daughter would not be thought of as weird for not getting with child, and maybe the angels would grant her fertility.
They arrived in Terre d'Ange just before Dorji's eighth birthday. Lhamo tried to provide for his daughter and himself, but without language skills, he couldn't get meaningful employment. And Dorji was near starved. But there seemed to be a place where one could leave children and they would be cared for. So, he brought his daughter to the Night Court. He told them that her mother was a d'Angeline woman who died in childbirth; and that he could not manage to feed the child on his own, in a foreign land.
Jasmine agreed to foster her. Dorji was a beautiful girl, who fit the House's aesthetics. She entered Jasmine and began to learn its tenets. But Jasmine soon learned that Dorji had a penchant for stealing. They didn't want that in their House, so they quickly tried to find another to place her in. She was good with numbers and enjoyed risk-taking, so they made a deal with Bryony (without saying anything about the stealing).
On her tenth birthday, Dorji went to continue her training with Bryony. Because she could get money through gambling, she stopped stealing as much. But she was prone to cheating. Bryony beat her every time they caught her cheating, so she got better at hiding her unscrupulous behavior. Now she is fully marqued she has even less need to cheat or steal - and can comfortably support her father and herself - but she still loves the thrill of it.
