History: Lisabette Cazat's parents are smudges in her memory. They had been leather tanners, before a freak accident in which a carriage hit them and ran while they were delivering parchment to the Temple of Kushiel. Lisabette was only four at the time. Her grandfather, Robert Cazat, did his utmost to care for her during her youth, but he was too elderly to work in the family tannery. Grandfather and grand-daughter soon found themselves living on the charity of the Temple of Kushiel, who said it was recompense for the loss of the old man's son and daughter-in-law under contract with the Temple. All parties involved knew it had nothing to do with that. It was simply what Temples to the Companions did for the downtrodden.
As Lisabette grew older, she began taking her lessons with the Temple's fosterlings. Her grandfather encouraged her to also spend extra hours learning about Kushiel from the priests and priestesses, who had shown them both mercy from starvation and homelessness. In her teenage years, Lisabette became an acolyte, knowing that becoming a priestess would ensure a stipend. It would not be much, but it would keep herself and her grandfather housed and fed.
In her last years as an acolyte, Lisabette learned to dole out Kushiel's mercy. It awoke something within her that she did not know existed. She enjoyed inflicted pain; and at the same time, she enjoyed imagining herself in the devotee's position. Lisabette believes that the Temple's devotees would not appreciate being objects of her voyeuristic desires, so she does her utmost to maintain a steely facade during her work in the Temple.
